CommunityCAD docs: Signing in and your account

CommunityCAD

Signing in and your account

Sign in with Google or GitHub, what we receive from them, and signing out.

CommunityCAD has no passwords. You sign in with your Google or GitHub account, so there's no CommunityCAD password to remember, reset or leak.

You don't need an account to browse, search, read model pages or download (within the Free limits). You need one to upload, comment, like, follow, rate, donate, subscribe, link a printer, or see your download history.

Signing in#

  1. Choose Sign in at the top of any page.
  2. Choose Continue with Google or Continue with GitHub.
  3. Approve CommunityCAD on Google's or GitHub's page.
  4. The first time, you see a short sign-up screen (below).
  5. You land back where you were.

The sign-up screen#

The first time you sign in, we ask for a few things, once:

UsernameRequiredFilled in from your Google name or GitHub username; change it to anything available.
Date of birthRequiredNever shown publicly. Used only for age rules: see Age and 18+ content.
Agree to the TermsRequiredThe Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Community Guidelines.
Display nameOptionalShown next to your username.
Product-update emailsOptional, off unless you tick itTurn it off any time in settings.
Invite codeOptionalIf you were given one for the beta.

Until it's done you can browse, but not upload, comment, donate or link a printer. If we change the Terms in a way that needs your agreement, you'll see the screen again with just that checkbox.

What we receive from Google or GitHub#

FromWe ask forWe keep
GoogleYour basic profile and email addressYour email address and your Google account ID. Your name is used once, to suggest a username.
GitHubYour public profile and your email addressesYour primary verified email, your GitHub user ID and your GitHub username (used once, to suggest a username)

We don't get your Google or GitHub password, we don't keep GitHub access tokens, and we can't post or act as you on those services. We don't copy your profile photo; you upload an avatar here if you want one.

Your email address must be verified with the provider. Your email and provider IDs are never shown publicly.

Your GitHub user ID also lets you claim models we imported from your public GitHub repositories. See Companies and imported models.

Your username#

You choose your username on the sign-up screen: lowercase letters, numbers and dashes, like jane-doe. It's public and part of your profile's address, so pick something you're happy to show; it doesn't have to be your real name. To change it later, email contact@communitycad.dev. Your display name, shown next to it, can be anything and you can change it any time.

Using both Google and GitHub#

If both accounts have the same verified email address, signing in with either one opens the same CommunityCAD account. If they have different email addresses, they create two separate accounts.

Staying signed in#

You stay signed in on that browser for 7 days, then you're asked to sign in again. The session is kept in a secure cookie that page scripts can't read. See Your data and privacy.

Signing out#

Open your avatar menu (top right) and choose Sign out. This removes the session from that browser. To be signed out everywhere, for example after using a shared computer, sign out there, or wait for the 7 days to pass.

Suspended accounts#

If an account breaks the Community Guidelines, moderators can suspend it, for a set time or indefinitely. A suspended account can't sign in or act, and sees the reason. Timed suspensions lift automatically. See Rules, reports and takedowns.

Problems signing in#

  • "Email not verified": verify your email address with Google or GitHub first, then try again.
  • "This account is already linked": that email address belongs to a CommunityCAD account already linked to a different Google or GitHub account. Sign in with that one instead.
  • Anything else: email contact@communitycad.dev.
