Frequently asked questions

The short answers to the things people ask most. Still stuck? Get in touch.

Is CommunityCAD free?

Yes. Browsing and downloading models is completely free. We also offer optional paid Supporter tiers for members who want to back the platform and lift download limits, but you never have to pay to use the core library.

What file formats can I download and upload?

We support open formats like STEP, STL, OBJ, 3MF, DXF, SVG, and FreeCAD, alongside proprietary ones such as SolidWorks and Fusion 360. Models often include multiple formats so you can grab the one you need.

Who owns the models, and how can I use them?

Creators retain ownership of what they upload and choose a license for each model. Always check the license shown on a model's page before using it in a project — it tells you exactly what's permitted.

Do I need an account?

You can browse and search without an account. You'll need a free account to download some files, upload your own models, score accuracy, donate to creators, or send feedback.

How do donations work?

You can support creators directly with a one-time or recurring donation. The creator receives the full amount you choose; payment processing is covered on top, and CommunityCAD keeps a small platform fee (the greater of $0.50 or 5%). It all runs securely through Stripe.

How do I upload my own models?

Sign in and click “+ Upload.” Add your CAD files, a title, description, tags, and an optional datasheet, pick a license, and publish. You can upload multiple files and add new versions over time.

I found a bug or have a feature idea. What do I do?

Use the Feedback button in the corner of any page (when signed in). Bugs and feature requests go straight to the team so we can track and act on them. For anything else, reach out on the Contact page.

How do I report a model or request a takedown?

Every model page has a Report option for content that breaks our guidelines. For copyright concerns, see our DMCA page to file a takedown notice.
